This Saturday in Nice I met the team behind Luminiscence
The already stunning Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption basilica (Our Lady of the Assumption) turns into an immersive experience on select evenings. Inside — 22 projectors, a 14-person choir, hypnotic acoustics, and architecture brought to life by video mapping that highlights and pulls details out of the darkness. It makes you see the space in a completely new way — like stepping into live VR/AR 3D, but real.
When an act ends and the interior returns to its original state, the transformation effect hits you even harder — like you’ve just been peeled away from something.
You sit on a bench and keep turning your head — the neck workout needs some serious skill upgrades. But it’s totally worth it: nothing happens in front of you on a typical stage — it’s all around you. A spring night’s dream. I was caught deep in it — and how.
As far as I know, the show is currently running in five cities across France, with Germany and Spain next. If you get the chance — you know what to do.
I can only imagine the kind of challenge it takes to put together a puzzle like this — from concept to tech, from permissions to perfect sync. Respect!
