باکتری گوشت‌خوار می‌تواند ظرف ۴۸ ساعت مبتلایان را از پا درآورد.به گزارش فورچون، موسسه ملی بیماری‌های عفونی ژاپن اعلام کرده است که در نیمه نخست سال، ۹۷۷ نفر به سندرم شوک سمی استرپتوکوکی (STSS) یا «باکتری گوشت‌خوار» مبتلا شده‌اند.این میزان از مجموع ۹۴۱ مورد ابتلا در سال ۲۰۲۳ بسیار بیشتر است
باکتری استرپتوکوک گروه A (GAS)، که به دلیل ایجاد گلودرد باکتریایی در کودکان شناخته شده است، می‌تواند در بزرگسالان عوارض شدیدی مانند درد اندام، تب و نارسایی اعضا منجر شود و در بسیاری از موارد، به ویژه در افراد بالای ۵۰ سال، ظرف ۴۸ ساعت به مرگ بینجامد.در اواخر سال ۲۰۲۲، حداقل پنج کشور اروپایی شیوع این بیماری را گزارش کرده بودند. کارشناسان می‌گویند که رعایت بهداشت دست‌ها و درمان سریع زخم می‌تواند از گسترش این بیماری جلوگیری کند
