中國改革開放40多年，人們曾熱衷學習外語，尤其是英語更是大學的熱門科系，但隨著「文化自信」不斷提升，近兩年越來越多中國的大專院校裁撤英語系。
報道稱「隨著中國國際地位提升，以及中國文化的不斷傳播，英語不再是被認為是一種必須掌握的語言」；有初中英語老師感慨：「10幾年前英語還是一個輝煌的專業，但現在情況完全不同了」。
