佳能相机“Canon”的本义其实是“观音”。Canon，是“观音”的日语发音Kwanon（现代作Kannon）的西方化变奏（英语人对Kwa这类音通常觉得难发音）。“Canon=キヤノン”的发音与“观音＝カンノン”的发音因为很相似，所以让人觉得这两个名字的变换没有违和感。
佳能的初代相机叫“Kwanon”，也是日语的“观音”的传统读法。根据佳能网站的介绍，创始人为求好运，保佑他们做出世界上最好的相机，第一代的logo也是观音，最初款的镜头，还以佛陀的阿罗汉弟子“迦叶”命名，叫Kasyapa。
