Vistaar News 新闻频道在事发后向公众透露了更多关于此事的细节。在前一天晚上（6月8日），毛派组织在NH-30国道附近的工地上烧毁了一辆挖掘机。该工地距离孔塔城区仅2公里，而且前方4公里处就是凡迪古达（Fandiguda）军营，那里是中央后备警察部队（CRPF）第228营的总部。该地区在过去几年里没有出现毛派活动的迹象，这导致警方放松了警惕。高级官员在没有扫雷队伍先行探路的情况下，仅带领一小队人马就前往该地进行调查。调查过程中，他们踩到了毛派埋设的地雷，导致一名副警司（ASP）死亡、一名分区警务官员（SDOP）和一名基层警局官员（TI）受伤。据该媒体报道，还有两名随行的士兵也被炸伤。
