Oodi Helsinki Central Library, designed by @ala_architects, is a symbol of the relationship between the government and the populace. The library has an open-plan reading room, nicknamed “book heaven,” and offers facilities such as a café, restaurant, public balcony, movie theatre, audio-visual recording studios, and a maker space.
Oodi was constructed using locally sourced materials and designed to suit the local climate conditions. The building’s timber façade is covered with 33-millimeter-thick Finnish spruce planks that follow the sweeping curve of the structure, extending it outwards to form a canopy over the Kansalaistori square. This design creates a seamless transition between the interior and exterior spaces, while also providing shelter for public events in front of the library.
