📍🇿🇦 Google Maps sent couple into notoriously violent neighborhood in South Africa where gunmen attacked them: lawsuit
Despite warnings to Google from U.S. and South African officials that Google Maps was regularly sending tourists on a route where violent thieves lay in wait to ambush them, the tech giant failed to take action, and a California couple were brutally attacked, a new lawsuit against the Mountain View company claims.
On an October morning last year, Jason and Katharine Zoladz were using Google Maps to navigate from their Airbnb in a coastal Cape Town suburb to Cape Town International Airport, where they were to swap their rented car for an SUV for a trip to a Kalahari Desert wildlife preserve, according to their lawsuit filed Tuesday in Santa Clara County Superior Court.
Instead of the Kalahari, Jason ended up in the hospital for a three-hour surgery and Katharine was left with lasting emotional damage after a bloody attack by thieves, according to the lawsuit.
Three weeks after the Zoladzes were attacked, Google agreed to stop Google Maps from directing users through the area, the lawsuit claimed, but, “That was too late for the Zoladzes.”
The couple are seeking unspecified damages.

🇿🇦 South African president defended 30 years of ANC rule in speech to Parliament ahead of elections
South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa used his speech in parliament on Thursday to play up his party's achievements over the last 30 years, but gave little detail about his plans to address the country's current major challenges.
He, however, insisted that his ruling ANC party is making progress in addressing South Africa's problems such as record unemployment, an electricity crisis and corruption allegations (though results are not that good for past 10 years).
Ramaphosa's nearly two-hour State of the Nation speech was largely a defense of his first term in office ahead of elections later this year.
"Over the last three decades we have transformed the lives of millions of South Africans, providing the necessities of life and creating opportunities that never existed before," Ramaphosa said.
He portrayed the ANC as having guided South Africa safely through challenges.

🇺🇸🇿🇦 US Congress introduces bill to review relationship with SA
The United States congress has introduced a bill for a full review of its bilateral relationship with South Africa following the International Court of Justice ruling that found it plausible that Israel has committed acts of genocide against Gaza.
The bipartisan bill which was introduced by US Republican congressman John James and Democratic Party congressman Jared Moskowitz this week could threaten South Africa’s prospects to benefit from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
The bill will still need to be discussed and passed by congress.
It states that not later than 30 days after the date of enactment of this Act, US President Joe Biden in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, shall certify to the appropriate congressional committees and release publicly an unclassified determination explicitly stating whether South Africa has engaged in activities that undermine United States national security or foreign policy interests.
It further states that the US government must provide an unclassified report submitted to the appropriate congressional committees justifying the determination upon its certificate.
