Hundreds of South African doctors and nurses are increasingly leaving the country due to concerns over poor working conditions, irregular pay, and the looming implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme, and more are expected to do the same in 2025.
Recently obtained data from Statistics Canada revealed that between January 2020 and July 2024, Canada alone issued 7,781 temporary work permits to South Africans, 600 of whom are healthcare professionals, with around 350 being specialists like cardiologists, neurologists, and emergency physicians.
This trend is accelerating, with approximately 200 healthcare professionals expected to leave for Canada this year alone.
The lack of clarity, combined with existing issues like unsafe working conditions and limited opportunities for career growth, has made Canada a more appealing prospect for those seeking better professional and personal security.

Ukraine’s new foreign minister Andrii Sybiha is scheduled to visit South Africa this weekend on a tour of five Middle Eastern and African countries.
Sybiha has already visited Türkiye and will visit Oman, Egypt and Angola before arriving in South Africa on 27 October 2024 for a two-day visit, according to his office.
It will be his first visit to South Africa as foreign minister. He is scheduled to meet his counterpart, Ronald Lamola, and may meet President Cyril Ramaphosa, sources say.
Sybiha, who replaced Dmytro Kuleba in a cabinet reshuffle by President Volodymyr Zelensky last month, will hold talks with “high-ranking South African officials, representatives of the business community, leading experts and the Ukrainian community,” his office said.

Police in the North West province have started a large-scale manhunt after a young farm manager was found murdered.
The body of Ian Boshoff (32), the farm manager of Snyman's Lodge in Buffelshoek, North West, was found around 19:00 on Saturday night with numerous gunshot wounds in a pool of blood in his office, according to Kol. Adèle Myburgh, police spokesperson.

The bodies of Hester Flemming (52) and her elderly mother, Cecilia Johanna Flemming (82), were found on Monday at the bottom of a 70 m deep Zama-zama mine shaft.
The Flemming women were kidnapped over the weekend on their smallholding in Eikenhof near the Eye of Africa estate, south of Johannesburg. The small holding is located about 5 km from the mine shaft.
According to the private investigator Mike Bolhuis, a group of at least eight attackers presumably attacked the smallholding between Friday at 10:00 pm and Saturday at 04:00 am.
The attackers gained access to the smallholding by cutting open the fence. They broke open the security gate at the house and ransacked the house after this.

A Russian Aerospace Forces delegation is currently in South Africa on a goodwill visit. At the same time, the Chief of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is visiting Moscow.
In a statement, the SANDF said it welcomed the Russian aerospace delegation on 29 October. The visit, concluding on 2 November, is due to see “the Russian air arsenal” brought to South Africa and land at Air Force Base Waterkloof.
Russia’s Defence Ministry on Monday said it had sent a group of aircraft to South Africa on a friendly visit, including Il-62 and An-124 aircraft as well as Tu-160 bombers. The arrival of the two Tu-160 bombers has been postponed until a later date.
