Integrating digital financial services (DFS) into Ethiopia’s Productive Safety Net Programm (PSNP) has transformed how aid is delivered. By replacing traditional cash distribution with digital transfers, the program has significantly improved operational efficiency while cutting the high costs associated with transporting, storing, and securing physical cash.

Today, nearly half of the households benefiting from the Rural PSNP receive their payments digitally through bank accounts. These digital payments are facilitated by the CBE and Ethio Telecom’s Telebirr, reaching 48% of rural PSNP woredas across eight regions, as well as Dire Dawa and Harar.

For deeper insights into how integrating digital financial services in PSNP programs is improving efficiency and inclusion, explore the report “The Integration of Digital Financial Services in PSNP Programs” under AKOFADA, our initiative for bolstering the accessibility of information on DFS in Ethiopia.

The financial sector is primed for evolution through a flood of new services, capital, and competition. As Ethiopia’s digital financial services (DFS) ecosystem matures, the banks that win will be those delivering intuitive, reliable, and accessible digital solutions.
