بر اساس مطالعه‌ای که در مجله جاما منتشر شده است، در مقایسه با گروه کنترل، استفاده از استروئیدهای آنابولیک آندروژن مثل تستوسترون، با افزایش خطر مرگ ‌و میر ناشی از علل طبیعی (مثل سرطان و بیماری‌های قلبی و عروقی) و غیر طبیعی (مثل تصادف رانندگی) همراه است.

در این مطالعه از دانمارک، ۱۱۸۹ نفر در گروه استفاده کننده از این داروها و همین طور نزدیک به ۶۰ هزار نفر در گروه کنترل برای ۱۱ سال به طور میانگین پیگیری شده‌اند. (همگی مرد) میانگین سنی در هر دو گروه حدودا ۲۷ سال بوده است. مصرف کنندگان استروئید، مردانی بوده‌اند که علت دوپینگ با این داروها به مدت دو سال از ورزش منع شده بوده‌اند.

میزان مرگ و میر به صورت کلی در گروه مصرف کننده این داروها ۲/۸۱ برابر بیشتر بوده است. این برای مرگ‌های غیر طبیعی و طبیعی به ترتیب ۳/۶۴ و ۲/۲۴ برابر بوده است.
