On December 30, 1644, Jan Baptist van Helmont died - an alchemist, physiologist, physician and mystic from the Spanish Netherlands. One of the most prominent representatives of the "iatrochemists". Sometimes he is considered the "founder of pneumatic chemistry" (gas chemistry at an early stage of research).

He studied at the University of Leuven, traveled to Switzerland, Italy, France, Germany and England.

The choice of the profession of the physician van Helmont was justified by a conversation with the angel Raphael. He attached magical significance to the phenomenon of imagination. Among the works of van Helmont are "De magnetica vulnerum curatione" (1621) and "Ortus medicinae, vel opera et opuscula omnia" (1648).

His son, Franciscus Mercurius van Helmont, was also a mystic and an alchemist, he wrote, in particular, the treatise "Opuscula philosophica" (1690).
